Stay on the Flores Island
The Tado community (Masyarakat Tado) are 15th generation descendants of immigrant Sulawesi ancestry who fled Islamic persecution sometime in the 16th or 17th century and settled on Flores island, intermarrying with resident natives and slaves imported from the Bima sultanate. The local people closely guard their culture and traditions. Experience the tribal traditions and cultures of the Tado village in a community-run homestay with your Jeremy
Jeremy has been hosting guests for the past 10 years. He is a strong advocate of community tourism and deeply engaged with the community network of Flores island. An expert on local customs and traditions, Jeremy takes several tours in and around the village.
The spider rice plantation of the Tado village is the highlight of the region. Several varieties of rice are grown in this area along with maize. Nasi goreng a popular dish in the region is served along with a fried egg and a side of fresh vegetables and prepared locally in the village. Tapa Kolo is a form of red rice that is put inside a small bamboo and cooked in an open fire, which is then served together with chicken, pork, and other meats
Tado tour includes 3 activities, such as Basket Weaving, Sarongs, and Pottery making. The Caci Dance is a Major Element of Manggarai Culture. The dance has a deep cultural meaning. As the Dance takes place it represents the male and female united as the whip strikes the shell. The villagers in Tado have worked hard to retain their original culture and one must experience the local lifestyle.

Guests like to eat our Ladakhi food. They say it is delicious, even when it is prepared by an elderly ama (mother) like me. I always make sure I serve them the cleanest and healthiest food. My husband is a copper artist. When guests leave us, they say ‘Julley’, and hug us. It makes us feel happy.
I became a Mountain Homestay Host in 2018, and I have hosted many travellers since then. Running a homestay has helped me and my family a lot. Not only is the solar set up in our house useful for us, but even travellers prefer to stay in our homestay because of it.
The training we got in astronomy turned out to be a life-changing experience for our village. I felt happy and proud while mapping the position of the planets and sharing the secrets of the universe with the tourists. Tourists told me that even they didn’t know so much about the dark skies!
