Kungyam, in the Rong region of Ladakh, is a village of traditional mud houses built on terraced slopes, with a gentle stream flowing through its heart. Visitors can discover ancient rock caves and the nearby 108 Stupas, a revered pilgrimage site for Buddhists across Ladakh, especially celebrated during Buddha Purnima in the first month of the lunar calendar.
The homestay in Kungyam Valley offers lovely views of the stream and valley. Warm and welcoming, the hosts treat guests like family, sharing the village’s unique charm and guiding them through its many sights.
Kungyam Homestay is hosted by Nawang Lungtok, an army veteran, and his wife. The homestay offers two cozy rooms with views of either the village or surrounding mountains. After retiring from the army, Nawang became a full-time farmer, practicing yoga and supporting his community whenever needed. A natural storyteller and pet lover, he enjoys hosting travelers, guiding them on village walks, introducing them to traditional water mills, and sharing the local way of life with shepherds and agricultural practices.
During your stay in the remote village of Kungyam, enjoy authentic local cuisine made from fresh ingredients picked right from village farms. The hosts will treat you to gud -gud tea (salty butter tea) and guide you through a unique culinary experience against the stunning backdrop of Rong Valley.
Savor farm-to-table meals at Kungyam Homestay for an unforgettable taste of local flavors.

Guests like to eat our Ladakhi food. They say it is delicious, even when it is prepared by an elderly ama (mother) like me. I always make sure I serve them the cleanest and healthiest food. My husband is a copper artist. When guests leave us, they say ‘Julley’, and hug us. It makes us feel happy.
I became a Mountain Homestay Host in 2018, and I have hosted many travellers since then. Running a homestay has helped me and my family a lot. Not only is the solar set up in our house useful for us, but even travellers prefer to stay in our homestay because of it.
The training we got in astronomy turned out to be a life-changing experience for our village. I felt happy and proud while mapping the position of the planets and sharing the secrets of the universe with the tourists. Tourists told me that even they didn’t know so much about the dark skies!
