Wanla Eco Homestay

Located in Wanla Village near Leh, Wanla Eco Homestay is situated approximately 120 km from Leh, taking around 2.5–3 hours via the Sham Valley route. Positioned along the banks of the Yapola River, the homestay serves as a stop for travellers heading towards Zanskar via Shinku La. It is also located close to the historic Wanla Monastery, a 10th-century monastery associated with the Drukpa Kagyu tradition.

Wanla Village lies on a key route connecting Leh to Zanskar, making it a practical halt for travellers exploring Western Ladakh. The region also offers access to local cultural sites, caves and natural features within the village landscape.

The space

The homestay is set within a traditional village environment along the Yapola River. It is part of a family home designed to host travellers while maintaining everyday village life. The setting provides access to open surroundings, farmland and nearby historical sites.

Stay

The stay includes private guest rooms within the host family’s home. Rooms are maintained for functionality and comfort in a high-altitude setting. During winter, heating is provided using a traditional bukhari (wood stove).

Each room includes:

• Attached Indian-style washroom
• Dry/compost toilet system used in winter
• Solar-heated hot water
• Basic furnishings suited for short stays

The setup is practical and aligned with local living conditions.

Meals

Meals are prepared using locally grown ingredients, often sourced from the host’s greenhouse and farm.

Guests are provided:

• Breakfast and dinner
• Local dishes such as khambir and momos
• Simple home-style meals

Guests may also take part in farm-based activities such as harvesting vegetables used in meals.

Bathroom

The bathroom is attached to the room with an Indian-style setup. During winter, dry or compost toilets are used due to freezing conditions. Facilities are basic and adapted to the local climate.

Outdoor area

The homestay is located along the Yapola River, offering open surroundings within the village. Guests can explore nearby farmland, walk through the village, visit the monastery and access surrounding trails.

Host

Your host, Sonam, manages the homestay along with her family. She is involved in farming and household activities and has knowledge of greenhouse-based agriculture. The family hosts travellers while continuing their daily routine, providing insight into village life and local practices.
