Ladakhi Felting Experience in Phyang Village

Located around 15 km from Leh, Phyang Village offers an opportunity to spend a few hours learning a local craft in a homestay setting.

At Phyang Eco Homestay, meet your local host, Jigmet Angmo, who is trained in making felted toys and has been practicing the craft for around a year. During the session, she will introduce you to the materials, tools and techniques used in wool felting and guide you through the process of making your own felted animal.

The session begins with an introduction to felting and the materials used in the process. Jigmet will explain how local sheep wool is prepared and used, followed by an introduction to the felting needles and how they are used to shape and compact the wool.

You will then watch a demonstration as Jigmet creates an animal using the felting technique. After the demonstration, you will work on your own piece with her guidance.

You can choose to make an animal inspired by Ladakh’s wildlife, such as a snow leopard or Himalayan ibex, or create another animal of your choice. Jigmet will guide you through the different stages, from creating the basic form to adding details and finishing the piece.

Felting involves repeated, precise movements as the wool is gradually shaped with the needle. The process requires attention and patience, allowing you to focus on the material and the form you are creating. It can be a calm and meditative activity, particularly for travellers looking to spend some time away from a busy sightseeing schedule.

During the session, you can also enjoy traditional butter tea and homemade cookies while interacting with Jigmet and learning more about her work.

The finished felted animal can be purchased separately and taken home. Other felted toys made by Jigmet may also be available for purchase, subject to availability.
