Learn the craft of wool felting with a local host in Phyang Village.

About your experience

Located around 15 km from Leh, Phyang Village offers an opportunity to spend a few hours learning a local craft in a homestay setting.

At Phyang Eco Homestay, meet your local host, Jigmet Angmo, who is trained in making felted toys and has been practicing the craft for around a year. During the session, she will introduce you to the materials, tools and techniques used in wool felting and guide you through the process of making your own felted animal.

The session begins with an introduction to felting and the materials used in the process. Jigmet will explain how local sheep wool is prepared and used, followed by an introduction to the felting needles and how they are used to shape and compact the wool.

You will then watch a demonstration as Jigmet creates an animal using the felting technique. After the demonstration, you will work on your own piece with her guidance.

What To Expect

The session takes place at Phyang Eco Homestay, in a comfortable setting where you can sit and work with the wool at your own pace.

You will begin by meeting Jigmet Angmo, who will introduce you to the materials and explain the basic process before starting the demonstration.

The session then moves into the practical part. You will have your own wool and felting needle and will follow Jigmet as she explains each stage of creating an animal. She will help you with the shape, proportions and finer details as you work.

You do not need to have any prior experience. The process is taught step by step and Jigmet will assist you throughout the session if you need help with your design or technique.

You can choose what you would like to make. Snow leopard and Himalayan ibex are among the animal forms you can take inspiration from, but you are also welcome to create another animal of your choice.

There will be time during the session to have butter tea and homemade cookies and interact with your host.

At the end, you will have the opportunity to complete the finishing touches on your piece. If you would like to take the finished animal home, it can be purchased separately. Other felted toys made by Jigmet may also be available for purchase.

The session takes approximately 3 hours and is limited to a maximum of 8 guests.
