About your experience
Yarab Tso, also known as Lofan Tso, is a sacred lake located near Sumur Village in Nubra Valley, Ladakh. The hike offers an opportunity to explore the lake along with its surrounding cultural and archaeological sites.
The trail begins in Sumur and takes approximately 30–45 minutes one way, following a gradual ascent towards the lake. Along the route, you can see ancient petroglyphs depicting figures such as stupas, ibexes and horses.
At Yarab Tso, a shrine dedicated to Kushwar, regarded locally as the guardian spirit of the waters, is located beside the lake. Your local guide will accompany you throughout the hike and provide information about the area’s cultural and historical significance.
The complete experience takes approximately 2–3 hours and combines a short hike with an introduction to the natural, cultural and archaeological features of Yarab Tso and the surrounding Nubra Valley.

What To Expect
The hike from Sumur to Yarab Tso involves a gradual climb and takes approximately 30–45 minutes each way.
Along the trail, you can see ancient rock carvings and petroglyphs. At the lake, visitors can spend time around the water and visit the lakeside shrine.
Yarab Tso is considered a sacred site by the local community. Visitors are requested to respect local customs and maintain a quiet environment around the lake. Please avoid loud music and unnecessary noise, and carry all waste back with you.
