About your experience
About an hour drive from Leh, situated at an altitude of 3651 meters, lies the beautiful village of Likir. Here, you will meet Lamchung Tsepail, one of the last potters of Ladakh and his son Rigzin. They are keeping a 1000 year old legacy of clay pottery alive in this quaint village of Sham Valley.
He welcomes you into a small workshop inside his home, where he continues this craft with patience and care. Step into their world, feel the earth in your hands and craft your own piece under their skilled guidance. You will learn how the local fine sand, known as Rdza S and mountain clay deposits are mixed together to create the base.
You can watch him work up close on his traditional hand turned wheel and slowly try your hand at shaping traditional Ladakhi tea pots or incense burners yourself. There is no rush, just a quiet simple space to slow down and be present.
The experience feels even more personal as you are hosted by his family. Enjoy some homemade tea and cookies, followed by a warm lunch. It is a simple and honest experience where you do not just see Ladakh and its art but spend time with it.

What To Expect
The workshop is set within a traditional village home in Likir where the host family lives together. You will be welcomed into their space and may meet the family during your visit, making the experience feel personal and homely.
We request guests to be mindful of local customs and traditions. Please avoid clicking photographs without permission and if you are travelling with children kindly ensure they do not touch the pottery or materials without consent.
The workshop session starts with an introduction to the art of pottery, highlighting how Likir is famous for this craft and how your hosts are one of the last potter families present. The session is conducted in a traditional setting where guests sit and slowly try their hand at crafting their own piece just as it has been practiced for generations. Guests may take their made souvenirs back home after making them. The drive from Leh to Likir is scenic, passing by a magnificent golden statue of Buddha, making the journey as enjoyable as the experience itself.
Upon completion of the experience you will be served tea, cookies and a freshly prepared lunch by the family. Washroom facilities are available within the house.
