Kungyam Eco Homestay

Located in Kungyam Village, Kungyam Eco Homestay is situated approximately 90 km from Leh, taking around 2 hours by road on the route towards Hanle and Tso Moriri. Set within the Rong region of Ladakh, the homestay is positioned inside a valley with streams flowing through the village and traditional mud houses built on terraced slopes. The location provides access to remote landscapes, village life and nearby cultural sites such as the 108 stupas.

Kungyam Village lies slightly off the main road, offering a quieter setting while still being connected to routes leading towards eastern Ladakh, including Hanle and Tso Moriri.

The space

The homestay is set within a traditional village environment surrounded by mountains and small glacier-fed streams. It is part of a family home designed to host travellers while continuing everyday village activities. The setting provides access to open landscapes, farmland and nearby walking trails.

Stay

The stay includes private guest rooms within the host family’s home. Rooms are maintained for functionality and comfort in a high-altitude setting.

Each room includes:

• Access to a private but non-attached washroom
• Additional common washroom facilities for other rooms
• Solar-heated hot water
• Basic furnishings suited for short stays

The setup is practical and aligned with local conditions.

Meals

Meals are prepared using locally sourced ingredients, often from village farms.

Guests are provided:

• Breakfast and dinner
• Local dishes such as chutagi
• Traditional butter tea (gud-gud tea)
• Simple home-style meals

Guests may also participate in farm-based activities such as harvesting vegetables used for meals.

Bathroom

The washroom is not attached to the room but is located nearby and reserved for guest use. It includes a western-style setup in summer and a dry toilet system in winter. Facilities are basic and adapted to local conditions.

Outdoor area

The homestay is located within a valley setting, offering views of surrounding mountains, streams and village homes. Guests can walk through the village, explore nearby trails and spend time in open natural surroundings.

Host

Your host, Nawang Lungtok, is a retired army veteran who now manages the homestay with his family. He is involved in farming and local activities and shares knowledge about village life, local traditions and the region. The family hosts travellers while continuing their daily routine, offering insight into life in Kungyam.
