About your experience
Just about 3 hours from Leh, on the Kargil–Leh highway, lies the beautiful village of Domkhar, surrounded by apricot orchards and quiet mountain views. Here, you will meet a local artist who has been practicing the traditional art of Thangka painting for years. People travel from across the world to see his fine work, painting sacred thangkas that are kept in monasteries and traditional drums used in daily prayers.
He welcomes you into a small workshop inside his home, where he continues this craft with patience and care. As you sit with him, he shares not just the process, but also stories of Buddhism, the meaning behind the art and local folklore that connects you to the region’s deep-rooted heritage. You can watch him work up close and slowly try your hand at painting a small piece yourself, learning step by step. There’s no rush, just a quiet, simple space to slow down and be present. The experience feels even more personal as you are hosted by his family. Enjoy some homemade tea and cookies, followed by a warm, home-cooked meal prepared in their kitchen.
It’s a simple, honest experience, one where you don’t just see Ladakh, but spend time with it.

We request guests to be mindful of local customs and traditions. Please avoid clicking photographs without permission and if you are travelling with children, kindly ensure they do not touch the paintings or materials without consent. The session is conducted in a traditional setting, where guests sit on the floor and slowly try their hand at painting, just as it has been practiced for generations.
The drive from Leh to Domkhar is scenic, with beautiful landscapes and a few natural stop points along the way, making the journey as enjoyable as the experience itself.
