Itinerary

We will pick you up from the Leh airport and transfer you to your Homestay at Thiksey (11,500ft). You will be resting today and acclimatizing yourself to the High-Altitude environment with a view of the Thiksey Monastery. This day is called the Acclimatization day and is required to adjust your body to the low oxygen levels of this altitude.

Today begins with a beautiful drive from Leh to Kargil (250 km) along the Indus River, offering panoramic Himalayan vistas. The route blends Indo-Tibetan and Central Asian influences, making it one of the most culturally rich corridors in Ladakh. En route, visit the legendary Lamayuru Monastery, famous for its otherworldly ‘Moonland’ formations and stop at Mulbekh Village to view the 8th-century rock-carved Maitreya Buddha. Enjoy lunch in Lamayuru before continuing your journey along National Highway 1. The total drive takes approximately 5–6 hours. Overnight in a well-appointed boutique hotel in Kargil Town.

Today marks the beginning of a deeper exploration as we journey from Kargil to the Zanskar Valley. The route takes us over the majestic Pensi La Pass (14,436 ft), one of the highest motorable passes in the region, offering jaw-dropping views of the mighty Drang Drung Glacier, the second-largest glacier in Ladakh. The landscape shifts dramatically as we move from narrow gorges to wide-open valleys, making this one of the most scenic drives of the journey.

En route, we’ll visit Sani Gompa, a 2,000-year-old monastery associated with Guru Padmasambhava and admire the sacred Giant Maitreya Statue at its entrance. Arrive in Padum by evening which is a town named after Padmasambhava himself once the royal seat of the ancient Zanskar Kingdom and now its administrative and cultural center. Overnight at a comfortable 3-star lodge or guesthouse in Padum.

Start your day with a visit to the serene Bardan Monastery, one of Zanskar’s oldest Buddhist sites, followed by a stop at the stunning Sheela Waterfall, cascading down the rugged cliffs of the valley. Post-lunch, begin your scenic drive toward Shinkula Pass, heading deeper into Zanskar’s wilderness.
Your final destination is the awe-inspiring Gonbo Rangjon—a sacred standalone peak revered by locals as a manifestation of strength. Settle into an expedition tent at the base of this majestic mountain, surrounded by complete silence and surreal landscapes. In the evening, enjoy an optional nature walk, interact with nearby villagers if present and gaze up at a starlit sky unmarred by any light pollution.

Post breakfast, begin your return journey to Padum with a scenic drive via Purney, a key stopover for trekkers heading to Phugtal Monastery or driving to Manali via Shinku La. Purney is famed for the breathtaking confluence of the Kargiak Chu and Tsarap Chu Rivers, forming the Lungnak River that flows through central Zanskar.
En route, stop at Zangla Fort, a striking remnant of Zanskar’s regal past and a symbol of pride and heritage. You’ll also make a brief visit to Karsha Monastery, the largest in Zanskar, where relics associated with Rinpoche Phagspa Shesrab have been preserved for centuries. Upon arrival in Padum, relax and unwind at your previously booked guesthouse.

After five days of exploring the remote wilderness, we begin our journey back toward the comfort of Leh. Post breakfast, we’ll take the route via Zangla, a lesser-known trail known for its raw natural beauty and centuries-old monasteries. This scenic path is part of the old Zanskar route, once traversed by monks and traders before the arrival of modern roadways.
En route, we’ll stop at Wanla Village for lunch and visit the picturesque Wanla Monastery, nestled against dramatic cliffs. From there, the journey continues toward Domkhar, located just over an hour away. As you approach, the landscape transitions into fertile valleys and traditional village clusters.
Tonight’s stay is at a welcoming homestay in Domkhar, known for its apricot orchards and vibrant cultural legacy.

On your final morning in Domkhar, enjoy a fresh, home-cooked Ladakhi breakfast. Then, join your homestay host, an acclaimed Thangka artist for a hands-on painting session. Gain rare insight into this sacred Himalayan art form, learning about the traditional natural pigments, iconography and the symbolic stories that each motif represents. After spending 1–2 enriching hours immersed in art and conversation, bid farewell to your host.
Begin your scenic return drive to Leh along the Indus River, passing through the culturally rich villages of Basgo and Nimmu. This stretch offers spectacular views and a gradual re-entry into the more urban landscape. Upon arrival in Leh, check into a boutique homestay for your final night in Ladakh.

Your Ladakh adventure concludes as you transfer to the airport for your flight back to Delhi accompanied by a MH team member to assist you with your departure.

What To Expect

Zanskar is one of the most remote regions in Ladakh, and this journey reflects that. Expect long drives (5–8 hours on some days), high-altitude travel above 3,500–4,500 meters and changing road conditions especially while crossing passes like Pensi La or Shinkula.

The first 1–2 days are important for acclimatization. As you move deeper into Zanskar, facilities become more basic. Stays are clean and comfortable but simple especially in Padum and near Gonbo Rangjon where you will stay in tents with limited infrastructure.

Network connectivity is minimal or unavailable for most of the trip. Weather can change quickly, even in summer, and temperatures can drop significantly in the evenings. Carry proper warm layers at all times.

This experience involves real interaction sitting with families, sharing meals, visiting monasteries and spending time in places where tourism is still limited. It is not a fast-paced trip. It’s slower, quieter and more about understanding the region than just covering it.
