Stay Near Leh's Monasteries
Acclimatize at a Boutique Homestay, Experience Ladakh Beyond Sightseeing
Planning your first days in Leh? Explore four iconic monasteries and nearby boutique homestays offering village experiences, local cuisine and authentic Ladakhi culture beyond sightseeing.
Ladakh is known for its centuries-old monasteries that continue to serve as living centres of Buddhism. Every day, monks gather for prayers, chants and rituals that have been practiced for generations. These monasteries are more than architectural landmarks, they are places where Ladakh’s history, culture and way of life continue to exist.
For most travellers, the journey begins in Leh, located at an altitude of about 3,500 metres (11,500 ft). Since acclimatization is essential, the first day is usually spent resting. The second day, however, is the perfect opportunity to explore nearby monasteries without travelling long distances. Short drives, light walking and spending time around these villages help visitors ease into the altitude while making the most of their time in Ladakh.
Within a 20-km radius of Leh are four important monasteries, Matho, Thiksey, Phyang and. Each offers a different glimpse into Ladakh’s Buddhist heritage, and each is paired with a Mountain Homestays boutique homestay, where travellers can stay close to the monastery while experiencing village life, home-cooked meals and local traditions. Instead of visiting a monastery for an hour and moving on, staying nearby allows you to understand the place through the people who have lived around it for generations.
Matho Monastery & Homestay
Located around 20 km from Leh, Matho Monastery is the only Sakya monastery in Ladakh. Established in the 16th century, it overlooks the Indus Valley and is best known for the annual Matho Nagrang Festival, during which two monks, after months of meditation, serve as oracles for the community. The monastery also preserves centuries-old murals, thangkas and Buddhist manuscripts.
Just a few minutes away is Matho Eco Homestay, hosted by Tashi Yangzom. Set inside a traditional Ladakhi home surrounded by barley fields, the homestay offers a quiet base to experience village life. Guests enjoy home-cooked Ladakhi meals prepared using vegetables grown on the family’s farm and get a closer understanding of local customs through conversations with the host.
Your experience here goes beyond visiting the monastery. Guests can join Matho village walks, learn Goncha weaving, take part in Thangka painting workshops, interact with local artisans and experience seasonal farming activities. Together, these experiences provide a deeper understanding of everyday life in a Ladakhi village.
Stay beside Matho Monastery and experience village life, local cuisine, traditional crafts and peaceful Himalayan surroundings.
Phyang Monastery & Homestay
About 17 km west of Leh, Phyang Monastery belongs to the Drikung Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism and was founded in 1515. It is known for its annual Phyang Tsedup Festival, where monks perform traditional Cham dances. The monastery also houses old Buddhist scriptures, thangkas, statues and historical artefacts.
Nearby, Phyang Eco Residence offers a boutique village stay hosted by Tashi Yangchan. The homestay combines traditional Ladakhi architecture with modern comforts while maintaining the character of the village. Meals are prepared using vegetables from the family’s garden and guests are welcomed with traditional Ladakhi hospitality.
Apart from visiting the monastery, guests can hike to Phyang Phu, meet local women practicing traditional crafts, explore Phyang Lobon and spend an evening stargazing at Cosmohub, one of Ladakh’s astronomy centres. These experiences make Phyang an excellent choice for travellers interested in both culture and nature.

Thiksey Monastery & Homestay
Located about 19 km from Leh, Thiksey Monastery is one of Ladakh’s most recognised monasteries. Built in 1433, it belongs to the Gelug school of Buddhism and rises across 12 levels on a hill overlooking the Indus Valley. It houses the famous 15-metre-tall Maitreya Buddha statue and hosts daily morning prayer ceremonies attended by monks from the monastery.
Close to the monastery is Thiksey Eco Homestay, hosted by Kunzang, whose family welcomes travellers into their traditional Ladakhi home. Guests enjoy meals prepared with produce from the family’s farm and experience a slower pace of village life just a short distance from one of Ladakh’s most important monasteries.
The experiences here include guided monastery visits, morning prayer sessions, traditional Ladakhi cooking experiences, village walks and visits to the nearby Nyarma archaeological ruins. Spending a night here allows travellers to witness the monastery before the day visitors arrive and experience the rhythm of the surrounding village.
Stay close to Thiksey Monastery, attend morning prayers, enjoy local meals and experience traditional Ladakhi village life.
Spituk Monastery & Homestay
Only 8 km from Leh and close to Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport, Spituk Monastery is among the oldest monasteries in Ladakh, with origins dating back to the 11th century. Built on a hill overlooking the Indus River, it is particularly known for its Mahakala (Kali) statue, which is revealed to the public only during the annual Spituk Gustor Festival.
Spituk Riverside Homestay sits along the banks of the Indus River with direct views of the monastery. Hosted by Tsewang Dolkar and her family, the homestay offers comfortable village accommodation close to Leh while maintaining the atmosphere of a traditional Ladakhi home.
