About your experience
Spend time in Kyagar Village at Kanggyogs-pa House, a more than 100-year-old home that once hosted traders travelling across the Silk Route.
This house belonged to a local Muslim family and still does. While the structure has been carefully restored with modern comforts, its original purpose remains alive. The first floor, where traders once rested after crossing the Karakoram range, is now where stories continue, through music, dance and conversations.
Back in the Silk Route days, traders travelling between Central Asia, the Middle East and Tibet would stop here for a night or two. During their stay, local women would perform traditional dances to entertain them. These dances were not staged shows but a part of everyday life, reflecting seasons, journeys, emotions and community bonds.
Today, a group of seven women from Kyagar Village have come together to revive and continue this tradition. What was once performed for traders is now preserved as a way of keeping their culture alive, on their own terms.

What To Expect
Arrival at Kyagar Village
Travel through Nubra Valley’s sand dunes, fields and small settlements to reach Kyagar Village. You’ll be welcomed by the women’s group at the house.
Walk through Kanggyogs-pa House
Explore the house and understand its history:
- The central hall where gatherings and performances take place
- Old storage areas and living spaces
- The lower section that once sheltered pack animals
You’ll get a sense of how this space functioned during the Silk Route era.
Traditional Dance & Music Session
This is the heart of the experience.
- 2 to 7 dance performances based on time and interest
- Each dance tells a story – spring season, trader journeys, love stories, village life
- Songs are sung live by the women themselves
- Local men accompany with traditional drums and instruments
Between dances, the performers step away to change into different traditional attires, just like it was done earlier. The full experience can take around 3 to 4 hours if all dances are performed.
Hands-on Cultural Demonstrations
Alongside or after the performance, you’ll see everyday practices:
- Spinning wool using hand tools
- Making butter and curd using traditional methods
- Barley roasting and local food preparation techniques
These are not demonstrations for show but part of real life in the village.
Kitchen Experience & Conversations
Sit inside the traditional kitchen of the house and spend time with the women.
- Learn about old cooking utensils and stoves
- Understand how meals were prepared in earlier times
- Listen to stories of life in Kyagar across seasons
You’ll also be served traditional tea or local chang (based on preference).
Optional Traditional Meal
You can choose to add a meal experience.
Meal options can be 3, 5, 7 or 9 courses, depending on your time and preference.
A typical meal may include:
- Small snacks like dumplings and local bites
- Main dishes such as thukpa, buckwheat preparations, yak-based dishes or pulao
- Traditional desserts like apricot-based sweets
Meals are served in the same kitchen where they are prepared, creating a shared and intimate setting.
