Early Morning Monastery Prayer

Begin your morning with a visit to a Buddhist monastery near Leh and attend a traditional morning prayer session. The experience offers an opportunity to observe the daily prayer routine of monks and learn about Buddhist practices and monastic life in Ladakh.

On arrival, monks gather in the main assembly hall, where senior monks and young novices take their places for the prayer session. Visitors can quietly enter the hall and sit at the back or along the sides, following the monastery’s guidelines.

The prayer session begins with traditional Buddhist chants led by the prayer leader. Monks read from Tibetan scriptures as the assembly recites prayers together. The chanting is accompanied by traditional monastic instruments, including drums, brass cymbals and horns, used at different points during the ceremony.

During the session, monks may also be served traditional butter tea and Tsampa, while continuing with their prayers and chanting. This provides an opportunity to observe aspects of everyday monastic life alongside the religious ceremony.

The prayer session concludes with dedication prayers and blessings. After the ceremony, monks leave the assembly hall to continue with their daily activities, while visitors can spend some time exploring the monastery and its surroundings.

Visitors are requested to maintain silence, dress modestly and follow the monastery’s rules during the prayer session. Photography may be restricted in certain areas.

The complete experience takes approximately 2–3 hours and includes the morning prayer session and time at the monastery.
