In Ladakh, the night sky has always been part of everyday life. For generations, local communities used the stars to navigate routes, understand seasons and estimate time during the night.
Today, that connection continues through Cosmohub, a community-led stargazing initiative in Phyang village. What started as a local idea has now welcomed more than 350 travellers who visit to experience Ladakh’s night skies through astronomy, local stories and community-led experiences.
A Simple Idea That Felt Unreal
“When the team first spoke about starting stargazing sessions in our village, we laughed,” recalls a member of the Cosmohub team. “We see these stars every day. What was so special that people would come and pay to see them?”
What started as an exciting but uncertain idea slowly turned into something meaningful. Today, more than 350 travellers have visited Cosmohub to experience Ladakh’s night skies and listen to stories rooted in local culture and folklore.
The Sky Has Always Been Part of Life
For generations, the people of Ladakh have shared a close relationship with the stars. Long before maps and technology, ancestors used them to navigate mountain routes, understand harvesting seasons and estimate time during the night.
The sky was never just beautiful – it was practical, familiar and deeply connected to everyday life. Cosmohub was created to share this connection with travellers in a way that combines astronomy with local stories and traditions.
An immersive community-led astronomy experience blending Ladakh’s night skies, local culture, storytelling and traditional hospitality.
Training the Women
One of the most important parts of Cosmohub was preparing local women to lead the experience. For nearly 15 days, women from different backgrounds were trained in astronomy basics, telescope handling, storytelling and guest interaction.
Many of them had never used a telescope before, but today they confidently guide travellers through the night sky while sharing local folklore and stories connected to the cosmos. The project not only created new skills but also gave women an additional source of income and confidence within the community.
Building the Experience
The community came together to build the Cosmohub space from scratch. A small hut was transformed with lighting, furniture and educational displays to create a warm and welcoming experience for travellers.
Guests begin with a short audio-visual introduction before exploring a small astro museum that brings together astronomy and Ladakhi folklore. As night falls, telescope sessions under Ladakh’s dark skies become the highlight of the experience.
Food and Local Products
The experience also includes freshly prepared Ladakhi food made by local women using ingredients from nearby farms. Dishes like thukpa, momos, chutneys and khambir give travellers a taste of local hospitality.
The team also runs a small store where guests can buy homemade seabuckthorn juice and jam along with pashmina handicrafts handmade by women from the village. These products have created another source of livelihood for local families.
More Than Stargazing
Today, Cosmohub is much more than a stargazing centre. It has created opportunities for women, encouraged community participation and helped preserve stories and traditions that have existed in Ladakh for generations.
What began as a simple question “Why would anyone pay to see our stars?” has now become a reminder that sometimes the most extraordinary experiences are hidden in the things we see every day.
